Executive Team

Richard N. Akins, MD, MBA, Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director

Dr. Akins serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of Managed Health Care Administration (MHCA). He is a Board Certified psychiatrist who joined MHCA in 1990 after completion of his psychiatric residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed medical school with an M.D. degree in 1986 from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport.

Dr. Akins has served in a number or capacities while employed with MHCA. He has been a full time clinical psychiatrist providing in-patient, out-patient and partial hospitalization services to the general adult population. While continuing his clinical duties, Dr. Akins has served in administrative roles as well. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of MHCA since 1992. He became Vice President in 1995, and subsequently served as Assistant Medical Director prior to becoming Medical Director in 2003. Dr. Akins obtained his Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University in 2002.  Dr. Akins was named CEO by the Board of Directors in 2004.

Russell L. Adams, Chief Operating Officer

Rusty Adams serves as the Chief Operating Officer for MHCA. He completed his undergraduate work in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He began working at MHCA in 1990, and was appointed to the position of COO in 1996.

Doyle H. Stewart, Jr., Chief Financial Officer

Doyle Stewart serves as the Chief Financial Office for MHCA. In his capacity as CFO, Mr. Stewart oversees the controller, treasury, tax, contracting and managed care functions. He joined the company in 2000 and is a member of the company’s Executive Committee. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Stewart worked for a national psychiatric management company as its VP of Finance, a start-up dental management company as its CFO, and he was a senior manager in the healthcare division of Ernst & Young.  Stewart received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Alabama.

Brian Wingard, Chief Information Officer

Brian Wingard serves as Chief Information Officer for MHCA. He is responsible for overseeing operations of the information Systems Department and HIPAA Security. Mr. Wingard began working at MHCA in 1997.  Prior to his current appointment as CIO, he served as Director of Information Systems. Mr. Wingard has over 30 years of experience in using technology to build solutions for business. He has an Associate of Science in Electronics. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Wingard worked with Harris/Lanier Corporation for 16 years as a System Implementation Engineer.

Susan Griffin, LCSW/ACSW, Chief Quality Officer

Susan Griffin is the Chief Quality Officer of MHCA. Mrs. Griffin has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Alabama, and served as MHCA’s Director of Quality Improvement beginning in 2006. Mrs. Griffin was since named the Chief Quality Officer in 2016.  She began working as a Clinical Social Worker in 1990, and then spent many years in a clinical role within the Office of Quality Improvement. In 2003, she assumed the position as Director of Partial Hospitalization Programs for an outpatient practice with offices located throughout Alabama.  Mrs. Griffin has experience in treating patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders, as well as experience providing training in the areas of quality improvement, clinical documentation, and risk management. She is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Office of Quality Improvement and supervises both clinical and non-clinical staff within the department. Also in this role, Mrs. Griffin has oversight of all credentialing activities as well as all accreditation efforts.
